Top eco friendly cars
With the ‘green’ heavily on the new government’s agenda, eco friendly car news has been widely publicised in the media of late. The biggest car manufacturers are planning or bringing out new more fuel efficient models, far removed from the stereotypical image of electric cars that are bulky and can only travel a few miles without needing recharging. From fully electric vehicles to hybrids and hyper fuel efficient variants, eco friendly cars can fit most drivers requirements.
There is more choice than ever for those looking to lower their fuel costs and carbon footprint, so which vehicles are top of the electric crop this year?
Toyota Prius – The Japanese car-maker is no stranger to eco cars with the Prius being the first mainstream hybrid vehicle on the market. First launched in 1997, the model has undergone several face lifts, becoming the most popular eco friendly mid-size car. Its green credentials have attracted buyers of A list calibre such as Demi Moore, Cameron Diaz and Renee Zellweger, making it a must-have accessory. The figures are impressive with the latest generation Prius covering 72.4 mpg and motoring from 0-60 mph in just over 10 seconds. With Toyota’s brand name and its long-running history, the Prius is the most popular green car in the UK in terms of customer satisfaction.
Nissan Leaf – This ‘Leading, Environmentally Friendly, Affordable, Family Car’ aka LEAF, is currently presenting the biggest rival to the Prius. Available from December 2010, the Leaf differs from is Japanese counterpart as it is an all-electric vehicle, giving it the advantage of no exhaust pollution whatsoever. In good news for the UK manufacturing industry, the Leaf is to be assembled at Nissan’s plant in Sunderland, giving it a British twist. With good reviews from motoring pundits, the Leaf is assured to be a success.
Citroen C1 Ev’ie – A French contender to the eco city car market, the C1 ev’ie has come as a welcome surprise for urban inhabitants, whose previous choices have included the tiny G-Whiz. Benefits to drivers include being exempt from road tax and the dreaded London congestion charge, as well as free parking in selected inner city areas. With a top speed of 60 mph, the C1 ev’ie is never going to rival larger hybrid cars, but its compact size and financial benefits make it the perfect London run-around.
Tesla Roadster – For those that want to be green but go fast the Tesla offers the best of both worlds. Reaching 0-60 in less than 4 seconds, powered by an all-electric engine that produces 295 lb sq ft of torque, the Roadster is a veritable green supercar. Covering over 240 miles before recharging is required, the Tesla is ideal for city and countryside inhabitants, who want to feel the wind in their hair, whilst knowing that they aren’t causing any damage to the green scenery that is all but a blur. At £79,000 the Tesla is the most expensive of the eco cars featured, but with those performance specs, no-one’s arguing that it isn’t worth it.

Do cars come in the color green anymore?
Question by geniphurb: Do cars come in the color green anymore?
I was just doing a little research on SUVs in case I want to upgrade from my Caliber anytime soon. My favorite color is green and I have had 3 cars in my driving life and none were green. I really want a green car this time. I know that’s really silly and makes me sound super girly, but that’s what I really want this time.

Car colors go in and out of favor over the years. While you can always find a white or a black car, the colors in between are sometimes hard to find. Right now, it seems like green is not in style, but give it a few years and it’ll be back again.
My last green car was an ’86 Dodge Dakota pickup.

Can You Use a Green Energy Source like Water to Power a Car?hydrogen powered car
For more than a century, we rely on oil to fuel our cars. But did you know that the world’s oil is close to drying up because it is a nonrenewable resource? Well that may not happen tomorrow or next year but we are getting closer because of the demand in the world market. Why wait for that day when we can rely on a green energy source like water to power our cars.
Water can power a car? If you think that’s impossible, well it is already here but this is not yet being made on a commercial scale.
The German automobile BMW has produced the world’s first ever hydrogen powered car. While only 100 of these units were produced, you can already imagine if more of these vehicles are on the road.
The initial model namely the BMW Hydrogen 7 uses the body of the 760i model. Once you pop the hood, you will notice that the engine is different since it uses gas and hydrogen.
This just means we have not yet totally abandoned are dependence on gas. Given more time and money, the current 4.7 miles per gallon it can travel using water alone could hit double digits in the future.
The biggest challenge to using water as a green energy source as opposed to oil in vehicles is the engine. While there are cars around like the Prius which runs on electricity and gas thanks to fuel cell technology, the hydrogen combustion is less than 10 years old so you could say we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg.
To prevent the water from evaporating, this has to be stored in a large, 30-gallon, bi-layered and highly insulated tank so this does not evaporate into compressed gas. Another safety mechanism is the valves which are designed to open should the pressure within the tank exceed 5 bars.
With the success of the BMW H7, the company came out with a new car that is also partly powered by water known as the H2R. While we cannot yet put our garden hose into the fuselage to fill it up, this vehicle uses liquid nitrogen as a fuel.
Tests on this vehicle have shown it can achieve 285hp and reach a top cruising speed of 185.5 miles per hour. It can also accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour under 6 seconds.
But why use water? It is because hydrogen combustion is clean so it does not emit harmful gases into the atmosphere unlike cars that run on petrol or diesel that emit carbon monoxide. Studies have shown that it also weighs less than hydrocarbon-based fuels and burns faster than conventional gasoline.
So when can you expect to buy a car that uses water as a green energy source? Hopefully in the next 10 to 20 years. It is really up to the automakers because all we can do is wait until a better and clear car hits the dealership.
Right now, the best option we have are electric cars. Since its introduction in 1999, more people are using it because they don’t want to spend anymore for gasoline that could hit an all time high of more than 0 per barrel.
If water as a green energy source can be used to power a car, why don’t we do the same for solar power which has been around much longer?

The various green energy sources such as solar, wind, wave, hydropower and geothermal do not produce anything harmful which may have a negative effect on the environment.
